If you do not know what your prostate is or what it does, you are not alone. Most often, men don’t take note of the prostate until they are one of the more than 30 million men who suffer from a prostate condition that negatively affects their quality of life. A human prostate (found only in males) surrounds the urethra and is a little bigger than a walnut.  It produces 50 to 75 percent of the milky white fluid in semen. Enlarged or otherwise malfunctioning, this gland may cause urinary and erectile problems.

• More than 50 percent of men in their 60s and as many as 90 percent in their 70s or older have symptoms of an enlarged prostate (BPH).
• Each year more than 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 30,000 will lose their life to the disease.
• Prostatitis, or prostate inflammation, is a health concern for men of all ages and affects 35 percent of men aged 50 and older.
